Only Words

“Music is time.”

Built around original lyrics written without melodies, beats or predetermined genres, the songs existed first simply as writing. Thoughts, stories, anger, humour, frustration and observation captured on a page with no concern for what they might eventually sound like.

The music came later.

That freedom is what gives Only Words its identity. A lyric might become rap, rock, alternative or something considerably heavier depending entirely on where the words want to go. The sound changes, but the voice behind it remains the same.

At the centre of Only Words is a fascination with language — how a handful of words can mean something completely different depending on who reads them, hears them or carries them away. Some songs are confrontational, some personal, some deliberately uncomfortable, and others find humour in places it probably shouldn’t exist.

There is no attempt to make everything clean, perfect or easily categorised. The rough edges belong there.

Because before the production, before the voice, before the instruments and before anyone presses play, every song starts the same way.

Only words.
